ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, OFFICE FOR TRANSLATION & COMMERCIALIZATION

Occupational Summary

Assist in directing and facilitating the development, commercialization and transfer to practical uses of biological and life sciences technologies and inventions originating in all University laboratories in a manner consistent with University policies and values; provide oversight to all University functions, activities and units that participate in the technology transfer process.

The Office for Translation & Commercialization (OTC) is responsible for patents, technology licenses and new venture development for software, engineering, life sciences, devices and other inventions at Duke University. Through direct, daily interaction with faculty, small and large businesses, and venture investors, we build strong relationships and enter into agreements to translate academic discoveries into commercial products that benefit society, impact public health, and improve the quality of life.

Work Performed

• Encourage and evaluate technology disclosures for patentability and licensing potential.
• Create marketing and licensing strategies that maximize technology commercialization potential.
• Market technologies to potential licensees.
• Oversee the filing and management of patent applications.
• Negotiate, draft, and implement license, option, non-disclosure, and other agreements under the supervision of the Managing Director.
• Work with other members of the OTC team to further the goals and objectives of technology transfer at the University.
• Manage ongoing relationship with licensees and license compliance.
• Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
