Occ Summary

Perform a variety of horticultural duties invo lved in the preparation,maintenance, planning and design of landscape en hancements for DukeUniversity and/or Medical Center grounds; research an d analyzelandscape problems and provide advanced technical support andas sistance to grounds maintenance personnel.


Work Performed</h 3>

Coordinate and participate in the proper care of Duke Universitylan dscape and grounds to include trimming, edging, weeding, pruning oftrees and shrubs, application of herbicides, pesticides and fungicides,and ap plication of seeds, bulbs, plants, mulch and fertilizers asdirected; ope rate weed eaters, power edgers, power mowers, backpacksprayers, hoes, sh ovels, hand tools and related landscape equipment asrequired.Inspect ass igned areas for plant damage, disease, soil erosion, orlandscape problem s;identify plants, insects, pests and diseases asappropriate; recommend corrective actions such as removal of plants orremedial treatments as ap propriate.Provide advanced technical guidance to grounds personnel in th epropermaintenance and care of shrubs, trees, flowers and groundcovers;i nstruct workers in cultivation requirements for decorative plantingsand ornamental beds.Research, analyze and evaluate new and existing landscap eplans basedon a comprehensive assessment of aesthetic, soil, light, mai ntenanceand cost considerations; recommend permanent and seasonal planti ngsasappropriate, to include plant selection and plant procurement.Assis tin the development and implementation of new landscape plans;design and sketch ornamental plantings according to color schemes,plant characteris tics, and landscape requirements; provide informationand answer question s for departmental users relating to speciallandscape projects.Maintainf ield and project maintenance records as directed; preparereports andanal yses as requested by grounds management.Perform other related duties inc idental to the work described herein.The above statements describethe ge neral nature and level of workbeing performed by individuals assigof all responsibilitiesand dutiesrequired of personnel so classified.

Anticipated Pay Range:

 

Duke U niversity provides an annual base salary range for thisposition as USD $ 18.00 to USD $26.10. Education

Work requires knowledge of botany o r horticulture normally acquiredthrough a two year Associate degree prog ram in horticulture or two yearspost secondary education in botany or a related field.Must be able to obtain North Carolina Pesticide License</p >

Experience

Work requires one year of experience in hort iculture or related area toacquire technical skills necessary to perform such duties as plantcultivation, plant propagation, plant selection and other dutiesconsistent with greenhouse maintenance. Public Garden expe riencepreferred.OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/O R EXPERIENCEA valid driver's license is required.
