Position Overview

The AI Communications Manager will be responsible for managing the AI at Duke story, brand, and promotional activities. This role will ensure that the stories and messaging around AI activity at Duke reflect the priorities and strategic direction of the Provost’s Office, in alignment with Duke Marcomms. It will also serve as a support and amplification point for Duke units, including academic schools and the Duke Health system, engaged in AI research, teaching and learning, service, and staff development. The role will manage the AI at Duke website, newsletter, and social media, and will be responsible for generating stories and other content that tell Duke’s story around AI and other innovation trends.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Maintain AI at Duke website (30%)

  • Work with communicators and other staff across Duke to reflect all AI-related activities within academic and administrative units, ensuring that website content supports the goals of the Provost’s Office, LILE, and the collaborating units
  • Generate, update, and maintain content to ensure consistency, accuracy, and timeliness
  • Triage inquiries related to AI to units/individuals across Duke
  • Work with LILE and Duke Marcomms to ensure that all key messages are aligned with Duke priorities and messages
  • Align with all Duke brand standards
  • Ensure accessibility compliance
  • Maintain and optimize content for SEO and other best practices
  • Work with LILE and OIT to ensure website security and updates

 

Manage AI at Duke monthly newsletter (30%)

  • Draft success stories, news stories, and other content updates
  • Highlight all upcoming events at Duke around AI (as open/relevant to newsletter audience)
  • Amplify stories and event promotions coming from other units at Duke
  • Support community building and engagement efforts around AI and other innovation trends
  • Focus on the needs and priorities of the primary audience: Duke faculty, staff, and students
  • Monitor newsletter analytics and adapt strategy and tactics according to engagement data

 

Storytelling and messaging (30%)

  • Seek out and tell stories of AI innovation at Duke University, in collaboration with communicators across Duke
  • Amplify messages and updates coming out of Duke units
  • Manage social media content or accounts focused on AI at Duke content
  • Ensure that the website, newsletter, social media, and other channels reflect the diversity and dynamism of AI-related research, teaching, and resources at Duke

 

Support other Provost and LILE priorities as needed (10%)

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education

Work requires communications, marketing, strategic planning, analytical and organizational skills generally required through completion of Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, English or a related field.

 

Experience

Requires four years of experience in journalism, public relations, systems. marketing or related field with experience posting and publishing through print and electronic mediums, including content management Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills necessary to manage and coordinate a variety of tasks. Experience working in an academic environment is preferred.

 

Preferences:

  • Experience in higher ed communications preferred
  • Website and newsletter management preferred
  • Experience with academic or STEM communications preferred
  • Proven track record of engaging storytelling preferred
  • Experience in science, technology, or AI marcomms is preferred
