Occupational Summary
Oversee administration, management, scheduling, compliance, safe operation, and maintenance of DUML Marine Operations Small Boat Program (R/V Kirby-Smith, R/V Richard T. Barber, kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards), DUML Marine Operations building and shop space in support of scientific research, education and outreach while ensuring safety of vessels, crew, scientific parties, students, and visitors. Assist with the R/V Shearwater program, including shoreside support, vessel operations (relief captain or crew member), scheduling and contracting.
Work Performed
Oversee the management, operation of the R/V Kirby-Smith and R/V Richard T. Barber.
Coordinate boat scheduling, contracting and billing for the R/V Kirby-Smith and R/V Richard T. Barber.
Supervise, train and schedule vessel operators for Marine Operations Small Boat Program. Ensure programmatic compliance.
Oversee Marine Operations Small Boat Program budget and rate review; develop budget with DUML Associate Director.
Serve as Marine Operations Small Boat Program contracting and procurement lead, ensuring compliance with Duke University policies and procedures.
Serve as Captain for R/V Kirby-Smith and R/V Richard T. Barber as needed.
Working with the DUML Associate Director assist with the R/V Shearwater program to include shoreside support, vessel operations (relief captain or crew member), scheduling and contracting of the R/V Shearwater.
First line of customer service for R/V Barber, R/V Kirby-Smith and DUML kayak, canoe, and paddleboard users.
Effective cruise planning for DUML Small Boat Program vessels to include float plan review and management, communications, record keeping, etc. while ensuring approved cruises align with vessel’s designated missions of research, education, and outreach.
Work with Student Services to manage the DUML Marine Operations Kayaks, Canoes, and Paddleboards, including student training, monitoring of weather and water temperatures, communication of policies and procedures and the storage locker all while ensuring safety and compliance.
Market vessels availability and capabilities via existing website, email list servs, etc. -Serve as Marine Operations representative on Duke Marine Lab Management Team and special marine related projects.
Serve as resource to Duke faculty on matters related to oceanographic field research and PI vessel operations.
Maintain vessel compliance with applicable federal, state, local and Duke University regulations and policies. For example, ensure compliance for all required Coast Guard documentation, oversee Coast Guard vessel inspections, and ensure crew members have required, up-to-date training/licensing as dictated by the Coast Guard.
Responsible for applying for and managing Oceanographic Research Vessel (ORV) designation on all Duke University owned vessels.
Responsible to ensure compliance with Chemical Testing Program as defined by 46 CFR parts 4 and 16, 33 CFR part 95 and 40 CFR part 40.
Responsible for managing Marine Operations severe weather/hurricane emergency management plan with support from vessel crew and DUML Management Team
Coordinate, perform or contract maintenance for Marine Operations Small Boat Program vessels to include shipyard periods.
Coordinate, perform or contract maintenance for Duke University Marine Lab docks (floating and fixed). Maintain DUML Marine Operations building and shop space.
